Each May, elder law attorneys throughout the country educate their clients and communities about legal options relative to elder care. Therefore, as a licensed elder law and estate planning attorney, Michael J. Young loves to share his knowledge about legal advocacy, guidance, and services to enhance the lives of seniors and people with disabilities.
What is Elder Law?
Elder law is a specialized area of legal practice that centers around seniors, people with disabilities, and their families. Attorneys and their staffs provide a variety of direction about legal issues—from estate planning to long term care. As more Baby Boomers enter the senior community every day, the demand for specialized elder law is growing.
What Do Elder Law Attorneys Do?
One of the goals of elder law is to create and protect options for clients as they age. We strive to help them live with grace, on their own terms. Too many people (and their attorneys) fail to consider the type of care clients may need as they age. Instead, most focus on what happens after they die. In the field of elder law, however, we work with clients to help lay out a blueprint for life, even if things get rough along the way. We use it to help make sure they get what they want as they get older.
Incapacity Planning
For instance, 6.5 million Americans over the age of 65 have Alzheimer’s or some form of dementia. And far too often, people fail to consider they could develop this type of condition as they prepare their estate. Also pertinent, as healthcare options and physical conditioning improve, people are living longer now than ever before. In my position as an elder law attorney, I remind clients of the myriad possibilities they might encounter as they navigate the world around them.
Medi-Cal Qualification
Another obstacle millions of California senior citizens may encounter is the need to qualify for Medi-Cal coverage. Through online resources, video seminars and in-person trainings, we educate clients and friends to navigate the somewhat confusing process of Medi-Cal qualification. We show people how to qualify for Medi-Cal coverage for nursing home care, without selling their homes or leaving family members penniless. Most people are surprised at available solutions for paying for assisted living and long-term care.
Solutions
One of the biggest fears that many people face today is that they will wipe out their life savings if they end up in a nursing home. Whether you or your family member is in a crisis or not, it is important for you to understand what you can do to protect your hard-earned assets. Make sure your estate protects your beneficiaries. By attending one of my free workshops, you can learn how to:
- Avoid having your life savings wiped by a nursing home spend down.
- Protect your home as a legacy for your loved ones and avoid a Medi-Cal lien.
- Understand the asset protection language which most people don’t have in their estate planning documents. This can help protect your life savings.
